Empowerment Physical Therapy

Yoga for every body: chair or mat, your choice

Yoga That Meets You Where You Are

At Empowerment Physical Therapy, we believe yoga should feel supportive, not intimidating.

That’s why our new yoga classes, led by Lynette, our yoga instructor, alongside Dr. Lin, are designed to offer both mat and chair options for every movement. Whether you’re new to yoga, returning after a break, or managing physical limitations, you’ll always have a comfortable way to participate.

Classes are offered Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, making it easy to find a time that works for your schedule and energy level.

Watch a short demo of how both options work:

Why Chair and Mat Yoga Options Matter After 50

As we move through our 50s, 60s, and beyond, comfort, balance, and joint health become more important. Some days your body may feel ready to get down on the mat — and other days, a chair simply feels better.

Chair yoga allows you to:

  • Stay supported and stable

  • Reduce strain on knees, hips, and lower back

  • Focus on breathing, posture, and gentle movement

Mat yoga offers:

  • Deeper stretches when your body feels ready

  • Opportunities to build strength and flexibility

  • A grounded, calming experience

In our classes, both versions are demonstrated, so you can choose what feels right for your body — without pressure or comparison.

A Gentle Start: Child’s Pose With Options

One of the first movements we practice is Child’s Pose, a calming posture that helps release tension in the back, shoulders, and hips.

  • On the mat, this involves gently folding forward and allowing the body to relax.

  • In the chair, the same stretch is recreated using support — often with a chair or exercise ball — so you still receive the benefits without kneeling or getting on the floor.

We begin with a slow inhale, lifting the arms, and then exhale as we ease into the pose. Movements are unhurried, guided, and always optional.

Adding a Soft Side Stretch

From Child’s Pose, we stay low and add a gentle side stretch.

This movement helps:

  • Open the sides of the body

  • Reduce stiffness in the ribs and upper back

  • Encourage slow, calming breaths

Participants gently move their hands to one side, pause for a breath, then return to center before switching sides. Whether done on the mat or in a chair, the focus remains on comfort — not pushing or forcing the stretch.

Gentle Twists for Everyday Movement

Twisting movements are an important part of staying mobile, especially for daily activities like turning, reaching, or looking behind you.

In class:

  • One option is done standing, if you feel steady

  • Another option is done seated in a chair

With hands in a relaxed prayer position, we inhale deeply and gently rotate to one side, allowing the eyes to follow the movement. After a pause and a breath, we return to center and repeat on the other side.

All twists are slow, controlled, and guided — helping improve spinal mobility while staying safe.

Designed With Safety and Support in Mind

Because these classes are offered within a physical therapy setting, safety is always a priority. Movements can be modified, rest breaks are encouraged, and no one is ever expected to “keep up.”

If you have:

  • Joint concerns

  • Balance issues

  • Chronic pain

  • Or simply feel unsure about starting yoga

You’ll be guided with care, reassurance, and respect for your body.

Is This Yoga Class Right for You?

These classes may be a great fit if you:

  • Are 50+ and looking for gentle, supportive movement

  • Prefer having a chair option available

  • Want to improve flexibility without strain

  • Are new to yoga or returning after time away

No prior experience is needed — just a willingness to move gently and breathe.
