The Mental Trap Making Your Injury Worse

Why Injury Feels Harder Than It Should

Many people are surprised to learn that some of the pain they experience during recovery isn’t just physical — it’s mental and emotional.

At Empowerment Physical Therapy, Dr. Lin often talks with patients about how frustration, comparison, and unmet expectations can amplify pain and slow healing.

You may feel like:

  • You should be better by now

  • Your body is letting you down

  • Recovery is taking too long

That emotional weight can make everything feel worse.

Click below to watch Dr. Lin explain this in more detail:

A Story Many People Can Relate To

Dr. Lin recently had this exact conversation with a patient named Rich.

Rich used to be an avid runner. He ran marathons. Running was his outlet — the way he managed stress, cleared his head, and felt grounded.

Now, due to injury, he struggles to walk more than two miles before his back and the arches of his feet begin to cramp.

That gap — between who he was and where he is now — became the source of his frustration.

“I Used to Run 26.2 Miles… Now I Can’t Even Walk Two”

This was the thought Rich kept returning to.

And it makes sense. Losing the ability to do something you love — especially something that helped you manage stress — is emotionally painful.

But here’s where things get tricky.

When you constantly compare your current abilities to your past peak, you create a gap:

  • What you expect your body to do

  • Versus what your body can realistically do right now

That gap is where frustration lives — and where suffering grows.

How Comparison Increases Pain

When you live in that gap:

  • Every limitation feels like a failure

  • Progress feels invisible

  • Anxiety and stress increase

And stress doesn’t just affect your mood — it affects your body. Muscles tense. Pain sensitivity increases. Recovery feels harder than it needs to be.

This is why someone can feel more pain than the injury alone would explain.

Shifting the Perspective

Dr. Lin asked Rich to look at something differently.

When Rich first started therapy, he could walk about one mile before symptoms set in.

Now?
He can walk one and a half to two miles.

That’s nearly double.

Instead of comparing two miles to a marathon, Dr. Lin encouraged him to compare:

  • Where he started

  • To where he is now

That shift matters.

Why Celebrating Small Wins Changes Everything

When Rich reframed his progress this way, something changed.

He wasn’t “failing” anymore.
He was improving.

By focusing on what had actually changed — rather than what he’d lost — his anxiety decreased. His frustration eased. He felt more hopeful.

This didn’t mean giving up on his goal. His goal is still to return to running 5Ks.

But now, that goal feels reachable, not overwhelming.

Establishing a New Baseline

One of the most important steps in healing is accepting your current baseline.

That doesn’t mean giving up.
It means starting from where you are — not where you used to be.

Once you establish a new baseline:

  • Progress becomes measurable

  • Wins become visible

  • Motivation increases

And most importantly — you stop fighting reality.

Why This Matters for Your Healing

If you’re feeling frustrated by your injury, try this:

  • Stop comparing today’s abilities to your past peak

  • Identify where you started in this recovery

  • Acknowledge even small improvements

  • Celebrate progress, not perfection

Healing is rarely linear — but progress is still progress.

A Gentle Reminder

You are not broken.
Your body isn’t failing you.
You’re just in a different chapter.

When you minimize the gap between expectation and reality, you reduce suffering — and give your body the space it needs to heal.
